State corrections officers David Kingsley, Mathew Galliher and Nicholas Kieffer were accused in the death of inmate 43-year-old Robert L. Brooks, 43, at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Central New York. Galliher and Kieffer were found not guilty of all charges. David Kingsley was found guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. Multiple corrections officers repeatedly punched and kicked Robert Brooks in the groin, abdomen and face on December 9, 2024 in the infirmary at the Marcy prison in Oneida County. He died hours later the following morning on December 10 at Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York. The savage beating, which prosecutors said was the final of three beatings to Brooks, was recorded on video by body cameras worn by four of the prison guards. None had turned on their camera, but 30 minutes of video was passively recorded without audio. Kingsley faces a maximum of 25 years to life in state prison. Kieffer was offered a nine-year sentence in exchange for a plea deal but turned it down. In all ten New York state prison guards were charged and so far sentences of up to 15 years in prison have been given. Following plea deals the following officers will receive: Nicholas Anzalone 22 years in state prison, Anthony Farina 22 years in state prison, Christopher Walrath 15 years in prison, Michael Mashaw 3 to 9 years in state prison, David Walters 2 1/3 to 7 years in state prison, Robert Kessler 5 to 7 years in state prison and Glenn Trombly no more than four years in state prison. |
