Douglas Carter

Douglas Stewart Carter is a former Utah death row inmate. Carter, now 70 years old, was originally sentenced to death for the 1985 murder of Eva Olesen. No physical evidence originally tied him to the scene. However, following the Utah Supreme Court's 2025 decision to overturn his 1985 murder conviction due to severe police and prosecutorial misconduct Carter's original conviction was completely vacated after . he had spent 41 years behind bars. The defense is petitioning to throw out Carter's signed 1985 confession. Carter maintains that the confession was entirely coerced and that he only signed it to protect a friend from being falsely charged with harboring a fugitive. A report from the Utah State Crime Lab revealed that a newly developed DNA profile from the 1985 crime scene completely excluded Douglas Carter. The court will rule on what evidence can be shared with defense attorneys and whether further direct DNA comparisons should be performed.
