Derek Rosa

Derek Rosa is charged with the first-degree murder of his mother, Irina Garcia, who was found stabbed to death on October 12, 2023. Rosa's attorneys explored alternative suspects, including Rosa's stepfather, Frank Ramos. However, state attorneys dispute that claim, saying GPS data shows Frank Ramos was out of state at the time of the murder. Documents allege that a Rosa, then a 13-year-old, sent photos of his murdered mother and a bloody selfie to a friend in the moments after stabbing his mother to death. Also two weeks before the homicide, Derek Rosa shared a real video of a suicide, accompanied by an emoji that the prosecutors interpret as a demonstration of his 'morbid fascination with blood, death, and gore'. The case has become one of the most closely watched in Miami-Dade County, not only because of the brutality of the crime but also due to the legal, ethical, and social dilemmas it raises, for example: Can a 13-year-old teenager fully understand the consequences of an act like this? What role do mental disorders play in such a premeditated murder case? Where should the line be drawn between punishment and rehabilitation? Rosa does not face the death penalty due to her age, but she could be sentenced to life imprisonment or a minimum of 40 years in prison.
