Andrew Hayes is a Memphis man wrongfully convicted in the 2007 murder of Danny Harris. After nearly two decades behind bars and five separate schedule postponements, the formal legal proceedings to vacate his sentence has officially commenced. The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office formally announced in January 2026 that Hayes was innocent. The prosecution say that they do not oppose the post-conviction relief Hayes' defense team is seeking and expect to formally join the request to throw out his sentence at the end of the hearing. Hayes, who has an IQ below 70, gave a false confession after a grueling 27-hour interrogation by investigators. The actual individuals behind the 2007 beating death of Harris are no longer able to face trial. Sarah Lucas was tracked down and extradited from Oklahoma earlier in 2026, but due to severe pre-existing conditions, she died in a Memphis hospital just one day before her scheduled court appearance. Her mother, Tammy Vance, also passed away while serving her life sentence in prison. |
